[ARCHIVED] Changes to Yard Waste Collection Beginning January 1, 2015

Plastic Bag

In May 2014, Louisville - Jefferson County Waste Management District adopted the yard waste container regulation (51-507R) clarifying yard waste collection procedures for service providers. (Rumpke is Jeffersontown’s service provider.) The adopted regulation eliminates the use of traditional plastic bags by the resident. This in turn reduces processing costs at the process facility and enhances the quality of the finished compost.

Beginning January 1, 2015, all yard waste must be placed in one of the following acceptable containers:

1. Reusable Bins or one (1) of the 95 gallon carts provided by Rumpke: Bins should have sturdy handles, a capacity of
20 or 40 gallons, and weigh no more than 60 pounds. Rumpke carts are also limited to 60 pounds.
2. Paper Bags: Paper yard waste bags are durable and stand upright for easy filling.
3. Compostable Bags: Compostable bags should clearly state they meet ASTM D400 standards for composting. Bags marked “biodegradable” do not meet the requirements of this regulation.

Rumpke currently requires that yard waste be placed in the 95 gallon cart provided by Rumpke or a 30-35 gallon bin that is clearly marked “Yard Waste”. For those occasions when there is more yard waste than the bin or cart can accommodate or for those residents currently using plastic bags; bins, paper bags, and compostable bags can be purchased at many local stores in the area.
