Electrical Safety
Facts, Figures & General Information
Never before have our lives demanded such great usage of electricity in our homes. From lights to telephones to computers, our lives depend on electricity and its safe usage. In 2009, ignoring what we thought were “minor” issues may likely have lead to any of the 44,800 reported home structure fires involving electrical failure or malfunction.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides these facts and figures:
  • Between 2005 and 2009, 49% “. . . of home electrical failure fires involved electrical distribution or lighting equipment.
  • The 44,800 reported home structure fires in 2009 resulted in
    • 475 civilian deaths,
    • 1,500 civilian injuries and
    • $1.6 billion in direct property damage.

Safety Tips

Safety Tips (a partial list)
  • Have all electrical work done by a licensed and qualified contractor.
  • Replace or repair damaged or loose electrical cords. Better yet, consider having additional circuits or outlets added by a licensed and qualified electrician so you do not have to use extension cords.
  • Avoid running extension cords across doorways or under carpets.
  • In homes with small children, make sure your home has tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles.
  • If outlets or switches feel warm, there are frequent problems with blowing fuses, tripping circuits or flickering or dimming lights, call a licensed and qualified electrician.
  • Make sure your home has ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in the kitchen, bathroom(s), laundry room, basement and outdoor areas.
