Prevention & Public Education

Public Education Class
There was a time when fire departments only responded to fires. But communities quickly learned of the firefighters’ bravery and willingness to help whenever and wherever they could and the roles of fire departments began changing. Today’s fire departments respond to almost every type of emergency situation. Although we will always be fire departments, a more descriptive name might be All Hazards Response Agencies.

Just as fire departments have evolved, so too have their Fire Prevention and Public Education Bureaus. Fire inspectors and public educators not only teach children how to “stop, drop and roll,” we also work with older adults to help eliminate trip-and-fall hazards in their homes and with social groups to teach them how to identify and eliminate fire hazards in their homes. Fire Prevention and Public Education Bureaus have become Community Risk Reduction Bureaus.

Throughout these pages, you’ll find helpful – possibly even life-saving – information and related links should you need more in-depth information.
