Fire Department Connections & Signs
General Information
To help firefighters locate the fire department connections (FDC) for automatic sprinkler systems more quickly, JFPD requires all FDC’s to be marked by an approved sign.

FDC and Sign Guidelines
  • All FDC’s serving newly constructed buildings shall be 5-inch Storz connections, with a 30 – 45 degree, downward deflection.
  • Existing buildings constructing additions or performing a renovation of greater than 25% of the existing floor area shall modify the existing connection to a 5-inch Storz connection with a 30 – 45 degree, downward deflection.
  • A 5-inch Storz aluminum cap, with chain or cable, shall be provided for the FDC.
  • The FDC shall be arranged to face an approved paved roadway and shall be installed so it will not interfere with access to the building when hoses are laid from the closest fire hydrant to the FDC.
  • The FDC shall be arranged so that the connection is between 30 inches and 48 inches above the finished grade.
  • A sign (as noted above) shall be installed between 5 feet and 7 feet above grade over the FDC valve.
  • Remote location FDC’s shall have a red metal sign and/or decal.

In the event of multiple FDC’s, each connection must be labeled with reflective FDC, as well as the riser number and portion(s) of the building that riser serves.
